Improving Literacy in the District
About DC Reads
Did you know that almost 30% of third grade children do not pass standardized reading tests in DC? As adults, 36 % of DC residents function at the lowest level of literacy - functional illiteracy.
Be a part of the solution by tutoring elementary school students to help them succeed in the classroom and beyond! This is a semester or year-long commitment available to volunteers and to those who are eligible for Federal Work-Study.
Apply to Be a DC Reads Tutor
The DC Reads Program is committed to meeting this challenge by providing quality tutoring for children in need. We work with DC Public Schools, and community-based organizations to support literacy in Washington, DC. DC Reads provides on-site, 1-2 hour tutoring sessions in public schools and community-based organizations. The goal of DC Reads is to improve the reading proficiency of all elementary students. DC Reads tutors will change lives this year, and we hope you’ll consider getting involved in the program!
