GWupstart Commissioners

What is the Commission?

The GWupstart Commission is made up of four to six volunteer student commissioners (one of which volunteers is selected, or is voted, to be the chair of the commission), overseen by one faculty advisor, and the Program Manager for Service and Social Innovation. Each of the commissioners review the applications based on pre-determined criteria and rubrics, and commits to the specific underlying values of both the Nashman Center and the Commission.

Each cycle, the Commission will be reviewing the project proposals after the grant deadlines to provide their project assessments, feedback and recommendations to the Nashman Center.

APPLY TO JOIN THE 2025-26 COMMISSION

The GWupstart Commission encourages and cultivates student-led social innovation by providing institutional support to individuals and organizations to carry out innovative, feasible community service programs and ideas. The Commissioner team is composed of dynamic, graduate and undergraduate students, a staff member and a faculty advisor. The student-led voluntary commission reviews and recommends innovative & action-oriented service projects (or initiatives) for funding based on the proposed plan.

The commissioners meet twice per semester virtually or in-person to review the grant applications and provide their comments and suggestions through deliberation and discussion. Commissioners also support and promote Nashman grants and programs throughout the semester.
