Math Matters at GW
Math Matters GW collaborates with DCPS (District of Columbia Public Schools) to provide high-impact math tutoring to middle school students in Washington, D.C. In the 2022-2023 school year, Math Matters provided tutoring support to 160 students and recorded a total of 281,000 minutes of tutoring for students who had the greatest need for additional tutoring support.
How We Provide High-Impact Tutoring
OSSE (The Office of the State Superintendent) named High Impact Tutoring “a core part of the District’s recovery strategy.” A research-backed intervention strategy for addressing unfinished learning due to the Pandemic, High Impact Tutoring (HIT) relies on standards connected to proven, positive results. Math Matters adheres to these standards laid out by OSSE:
How the Math Matters GW Program Works
Math Matters recruits and trains GW undergraduate and graduate students to be effective mentors and tutors.
Tutors provide 1-on-1 or small group tutoring throughout the school year.
Tutoring groups meet twice a week for 45 to 60-minute sessions either during or after school.
The tutoring curriculum is designed to elevate students’ mathematical understanding and skills.
This opportunity is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in STEM, education, and tutoring. Math Matters is a paid semester-long or year-long commitment available to Federal Work-Study (FWS) and non-FWS students.
