Atlanta, GA: Refugee Resettlement

Every year, the United States provides safety and new opportunities for tens of thousands of refugees. AWB Atlanta will contribute to this effort through participation in various projects aimed at serving the refugee community and aiding their transition to America. Participants gain a new understanding of the challenges faced by these people who come here to restart their lives.

El Paso, TX & Ciudad Juarez, Mexico: Immigration & Border Community Rights

Through a week long border immersion program, AWB El Paso will learn firsthand the intricacies of life in both El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, life on the border, and the depth of U.S. immigration issues. We partner with Cristo Rey, a local ministry, as well as connect with community members, advocacy groups, and policymakers. The border immersion program highlights some of the many diverse facets and complexities of immigration.

Immokalee, FL: Migrant Worker Rights & Food Justice

AWB Immokalee will focus on the advocacy of migrant workers' rights and food justice. We partner with community organizations, such as the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, to make meaningful connections with the community as well as learn more about the issues of farm working conditions, unfair wages, and fair food practices. Participants will also experience the rich culture in Immokalee.

CLOSED Las Marias, Puerto Rico: Sustainable Agriculture

AWB Puerto Rico participants will work on an organic farm, Plenitud Eco-Educational Initiative, and learn about sustainable farming practices, including bio-construction, permaculture, and composting. In addition to participating in local activities and working with the farm team,participants see the role of sustainability in food production, resource consumption, and waste management and learn ways in which these sustainable techniques can be implemented in our own homes.

CLOSED Los Angeles, CA: Youth Empowerment & Mass Incarceration

The Winter Trip to Los Angeles explores mass incarceration, youth empowerment, and many related issues including  the school-to-prison pipeline, the prison-industrial complex, homelessness, and implicit bias. We partner with organizations focused on youth empowerment through education and combating gang violence, helping formerly incarcerated individuals reenter society, and supporting minority communities in LA. In this eye-opening trip, participants will discover the injustice of our justice system, connect with those most affected by it, understand ways to reform our prisons, and find out how all of these issues are strongly connected. They will confront their biases, be deeply humbled, rediscover their humanity, and look at our society in a new way
