Involvement Opportunities
Serve, Learn, Lead!
Participant
Alternative Break participants get the opportunity to focus on one of the four issue areas we will be focusing on this year and spend their Spring Break 2024 partnering with an organization that works within the same field! Some issue areas include: Housing and Food Insecurity, Community Empowerment and Sustainability, and Environmental Justice. Our Costa Rica trip application is closed, we are accepting applications for our Freetown Farm/Eastern Shore trip!
Trip Leader
GW Alternative Breaks Trip Leaders facilitate the Alternative Breaks experience for participants through diverse roles and responsibilities such as community partner correspondence, pre-trip educational programming, fundraising, budget management, reflection and meeting facilitation, and more. Apply now to serve, learn, and discover as a student leader!
Learning Partner
A Learning Partner is an integral member of the Alternative Breaks learning experience. Learning Partners are faculty and staff who participate as a team member of a GW Alternative Breaks trip. While Learning Partners are not responsible for the general planning of the trip, Learning Partners do serve in a more hands-on role through expertise in the issue area of the trip or geographic location as well as guiding students during their reflection and personal development. As a core member of the GW Alternative Breaks team, Learning Partners are seen by participants as a representative of The George Washington University as well as resource in understanding the context of each trip’s issue area.
Executive Board
The Executive Board, made up of 4-5 positions, will work with staff from the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service to plan and execute the goals and mission of the GW Alternative Breaks Program as well as assist leaders with the planning and execution of the service trips or virtual/hybrid service learning experiences. Applications typically open at the end of the Spring semester.
