Non-Citizen Voting

You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to make an impact in our community! Regardless of citizenship status, all students are welcome to join GW Votes efforts, become a poll worker, and advance democracy through civic engagement in the GW and DC communities.

You may be eligible to vote in local DC elections!

To register to vote, you must be a DC resident and:

  • Be at least 17 years of age and be 18 years of age on or before the next General Election;

  • Maintain residency in the District of Columbia for at least 30 days prior to the election in which you intend to vote;

  • Not claim voting residence or the right to vote in any state, territory, or country;

  • Have not been found by a court to legally incompetent to vote.

Read about the law (D.C. Law 24-242) that allows non-citizen DC residents to vote in local elections.

Visit the DC Board of Election’s website to register to vote.

Become a DC Poll worker!*

*Only residents of DC are eligible

Serving as a poll worker is a great way to support elections, help voters, and gain hands-on civic engagement experience. Poll workers assist with checking in voters, answering questions, setting up voting equipment, and ensuring elections run smoothly.
