Fall 2017 Symposium

This event was held Friday December 8, 2017, 9 am - 4:00 pm, Marvin Center, 3rd floor

 

Highlights this semester included:

  • A breakfast presentation by GW VISTAs' School-Community Liaisons about the work they are undertaking with DC Public Schools and some of the challenges around mentoring, food insecurity, technology, immigration and racial justice that DCPS students encounter as the negotiate their educational progress.
  • A lunchtime panel discussion with DC Community Leaders Laura Newland, Executive Director of the DC Office on Aging and Claire Cook, Administrative Organizer, One DC (Moderator: Charity Edelman,  Supervisor, GW/DCPS AmeriCorps VISTA Program)
  • Morning and Afternoon Sessions, including panel presentations and reflective discussions on:
    • Direct Service as a Pathway to Engaged Citizenship (Moderator: Amy Cohen, Director of the Nashman Center)

    • Social Entrepreneurship and Community-Engaged Scholarship (Moderator: Scott Stein, Associate Director of Social Entrepreneurship Programs)

    • Civic House Proposals for GW Engagement (Moderator: Colleen Packard, Graduate Coordinator of Civic House)

    • Community Scholarship and Engagement in STEM (Moderator: Shruti Yadav GW Biology Department)

    • Operación Impacto - Daring to Step Up in Our Commitment to Civic Values and Civic Action (Moderator: Dolores Perillan, Operación Impacto & Professor GWU Spanish Program)

    • Senior Well-being in DC - Recommendations from Research (Moderator: Emily Morrison, Program Director of Human Service and Social Justice)

    • Eco Equity Challenge Workshop (Moderators: Jonathan Butler and Kimberly Williams, GW Upstart Nashman Center)

  • Over 30 showcase presentations. During the Showcase Session, Symposium attendees are invited to explore the Grand Ballroom full of poster presentations, digital posters, art, engineering projects, and other displays representing the community impact and student learning from community-engaged scholarship.
