As a SMARTDC participant, you'll have the opportunity to make a measurable difference by helping students develop their literacy or math skills. When you work with SMARTDC and one of our community partners, you're not just supporting educational equity, however. You're gaining invaluable experience in leadership, mentorship, management, collaboration, and capacity building, while also building relationships with your GW peers, community members, and professionals in the field.

During the 2024-2025 academic year, SMARTDC participants completed approximately 7,249 service hours, an increase of 174% from the previous year.

In addition to tutoring, participants helped expand organizational capacity by designing and facilitating trainings that deepened the impact of their work.

Participants traveled to regional and/or national conferences to present their meaningful work.

There were also workshops including how to better respond to student writing at various capacity levels, how to better engage students in online tutoring spaces, and how to better work with students with learning differences.

If this sounds interesting to you, consider joining us for a semester or academic year, committing approximately 3-8 hours per week. Volunteer and Federal Work Study students are welcome to apply. The FWS application can be found here and the volunteer application can be found here.

We hope to work with you!
