Share Teaching/Learning Materials for Civic Learning: Fall 2026
Application deadline: May 25, 2026
The Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service and the Center for Teaching Excellence invite faculty from all academic disciplines to develop and share an innovative classroom activity/assignment that fosters civic learning.
We believe every college graduate—whether in social sciences, the arts, humanities, business, or STEM —should be prepared to engage as an active citizen. This project aims to provide resources for faculty across disciplines to prepare students with the skills and motivations needed to work to make a difference in the quality of life in the community, through both political and non-political processes.
Activities or assignments will create opportunities for students to use academic skills in civic contexts, for example, analyzing an issue or policy, or communicating complex issues (scientific, economic, etc.) to public audiences.
Selected Faculty Will:
- Create one ready-to-implement classroom activity or assignment to be distributed campus-wide for adaptation to a variety of disciplines (writing format will be provided).
- Attend a virtual summer cohort meeting to exchange peer feedback and share insights on active learning and assignment design.
- Join a collaborative cohort of educators and contribute to a campus-wide resource promoting civic education across the disciplines.
- Receive a $250 stipend.
Apply Here with a brief description of your idea for a classroom activity or assignment. This is a single sign-on platform, using the short form of your GW email address to login.
